| Simulation SystemsIn the development of its new vehicles, Volkswagen increasingly relies on digital simulation systems. In particular, computer technology for virtual reality (VR) in all three dimensions is extremely important. 3D technology provides many advantages for developers, designers, engineers and draughtsmen, and therefore also for every customer. Safety, ergonomics, maintenance costs, fuel consumption and emissions can be optimised at an early stage of the vehicle's development. Since October 2004, two new centres have been available to Volkswagen developers. In the project visualisation centre, three-dimensional representations of complete vehicles can be displayed in original size on a 5.10 x 2.10 meter projection surface ("Powerwall"). In a second centre, the total vehicle mock-up centre, the overall structure of the vehicle is displayed in three dimensions. In the digital mock-up (DMU), the vehicle is modelled on the computer with all the relevant assemblies and individual parts. In this way, the arrangement of the individual components and their installation and removal can be simulated and optimised. |
